It was established by the generous donations of our students' parents.  Last year, we gave out four scholarships, ranging from $300 to $1000. There is also no limit on the number of scholarships to be given out. The more applications we receive the better. Please go to the Scholarships page and apply right away!

Happy Chinese New Year of the Rabbit!
Everyone had a big feast last Friday. There were s
weet glutinous rice cake, curry fish balls, red bean soup, dumplings, sweet rice balls, cake, fried wonton, fried rice, chow mein, roast pork, fried shrimp, and even a whole crab! Several parents actually cooked the food in an Instant Pot® pressure cooker and bring the whole pot in so that the food would stay fresh and hot. Our parents are genius!
Of course our students likes the candies the best, such as Hi-chew and
Ferrero Rocher hazelnut chocolate.

Two of our talented students presented a live performance on two Chinese musical instruments: Erhu (二胡) and Ruan (阮) which is such an inspiration to many young students who were watching. To entertain younger kids, our student council set up booths for Chinese zodiac reading, fortune wheel, Chinese art craft and several games with candy prizes for winners.

As usual,
our school official photographer Philip Wong had captured the memorable moments with his high end camera and stored them here. Enjoy!

Don't miss the Chinese New Year potluck celebration on Friday 1/27 at 7pm!
Welcome to the Chinese New Year, the year of the rabbit!
恭祝新年快樂,身體健康!
On this coming Friday, instead of the regular classroom instruction, we will have a Chinese New Year potluck party at the cafeteria. Each parents are asked to bring a dish to share on their class's table in the cafeteria. We can try out delicious food from our children's class as well as those from other classes.  At the same time, the school have ordered a whole roast pig to be shared with all families.

Our student council will also do a live performance and set up some games for our students.
Come join us in the fun!

ANCCS Academic Contest 2023 is now open for registration.
Every year, Association of Northern California Chinese Schools (ANCCS) holds an academic competition among the students from more than 110 Chinese schools in northern California. This year, the competition will be held on Sunday March 26, 2023. It will be a fun and exciting day to meet many fellow Chinese students from across the bay area and compete with them in the same room! As there are limits on how many students from each school can enter each category of the competition, our students are encouraged to submit this Registration form asap before Friday Feb 3, so that we can coordinate to sign up the most of our students to each category. The competition categories include Cantonese Read Aloud, Mandarin Read Aloud, Pencil Calligraphy, Mandarin Speech, Cantonese Speech, Western Drawing, Chinese Painting, Chinese Writing Composition, and many others. Many many thanks to your generosity!!!
As of today, our school has received over $4300 cash donations! They are from our parents, alumni, friends and several undisclosed donors. Moreover, as some of their work places have matching programs, we received matching funds from companies such as Google, eBay, Lam Research, Intel, Apple, Cisco, etc. Our school is run by parent volunteers and every penny of the donations are going to the operation of the school. On behalf of the school, we want to give our sincere thanks to all the generous donations and everyone who are contributing their time or money to help running the school.

As our school is a non-profit organization, your donations are fully tax-deductible. Please visit our Support Our School webpage for more details.
12/9 Speech Contest 朗讀比賽 winners are here!
Whether our children came out winning or not, it was a great experience for them. In most classes, the speech is reading aloud or reciting a paragraph of Chinese literature. Each student is asked to stand in front of the class to preform the speech, giving them an opportunity to practice public speaking. Some would come out assertive and firm, pronouncing the words one by one. Others might come out shaking, but holding steady towards the end. A very few might just be too shy, and parents had to videotape the performance to send in as a make up.

We are delighted to announce the winners here of the five classes. Our teachers gave the students a lot of motivation and will present them with a winning certificate on the Picture Day on Feb 3, 2023. They will also be the first in line to participate in the Speech Contest to be held by ANCCS (Association of Northern California Chinese Schools 北加州中文學校聯合會) on 3/26/2023. We encourage all of our students to keep practicing speech. More practice will calm our stage fright, induce us to clearly verbalizing each word, and stimulate our body gestures to deliver the topic to the listening audience.

11/4 Penmanship contest 書法比賽 are done, and the winners are ...
Many students tried their best and parents were surprised at the great calligraphy their children was able to achieve. Our many volunteering parents-judges spent diligent hours evaluating, comparing and finally made the winning list. These winners will be presented by their teachers with a certificate on the Picture Day on Feb 3, 2023 and their winning entries will be included in our annual Yearbook.

For those of us who did not win this time, don't be discouraged. Keep practicing and improving, as the ANCCS (Association of Northern California Chinese Schools 北加州中文學校聯合會) Academic Contest will be coming up soon (3/26/2023). Even though the winners in our Penmanship Contest will have priority in participating in the ANCCS Penmanship Contest 鉛筆書法比賽, all our students are welcomed to join (if space is available in any contest). Please refer to ANCCS contest details and sample exams.

Watch out for our eNews newsletter!
Many thanks to Amanda, our Marketing/Public Relations Director, who have been diligently preparing and sending out our monthly newsletters. It contains a lot of information on the upcoming events happening in our school.

In the latest eNews #3, it described the
Halloween Family Fun Night we had last Friday, and the next upcoming event, Penmanship Contest 書法比賽, to be held on Nov 4. This is a Pencil Calligraphy Contest where the students will be given a short piece of Chinese words to demonstrate their calligraphy skills. Besides winning a certificate, they will be eligible to enter into the annual ANCCS academic competition next year.

eNews #3 also described our Yearbook Cover Design Contest. At the end of every school year, our school publishes a Yearbook, free to every student. We invite student participation in designing the cover of the yearbook. The competition is now open and the deadline to turn in an entry is Friday 3/10/2023. Please read the submission details in the newsletter and we recommend our students to start early on this contest.

Lastly, our 2nd (1st one was on 10/14) and the last Class Observation Day will be on 11/18. Parents can pick up a one-page blank form in a box in Building L hallway, go inside a classroom, observe and provide some comments on the form, then drop it off back into the box. We would not give any specific parent names back to the teacher, but would only aggregate the comments and provide a general feedback to the teachers to reflect our opinions and hopefully improve their teaching to our students in the future.

If you had not received the newsletter in the email, please feel free to contact Amanda at
public.relation@wvcls.org, or send us a message at the Contact Us page to add your email address into our email list.

Lots of fun in our Halloween Family Fun Night Friday 10/28.
Our students and parents had lots of fun last Friday playing games, enjoying boba milk tea, ice cream, and the raffle drawing till 10pm! Certainly lots of us had captured many prizes, big and small. Our school official photographer Philip Wong had captured the excitement in these pictures, plus many more pictures from our PTA Director Ken Law. Enjoy!

Thank you to many students in our student council and several volunteering parents who had made this event a success. This is a fund-raising event organized by our student council and subsidized by our school. It gave the students an experience in managing events and raising operating funds for future student council activities.

Join us in back-to-school night coming Friday 9/9 7:15pm in HHS cafeteria.
From 7:15-8pm, we will have our annual All Parents Meeting at the Homestead High School (HHS) cafeteria where we will introduce this school year's volunteer school board members, information on our finance, parent participation, planned activities and some important dates. We will also have a short time for parents' questions and answers, plus some light refreshments (most likely some mooncake 月餅 😃) after the meeting.
At 8pm, our parents can proceed to their child's classroom to attend a meeting with the teacher. The teachers would mostly be describing their plan of teaching in the coming school year, their expectation on the students, and try to confirm one or two parents as volunteer class rep. The class rep main function is to forward school news to other parents, collect a class fund (~$30/student) and manage spending the money on class functions during Christmas, New Year and end of school year party.

This year we had 20 new kindergarteners joining our CK classes with over 100 total enrollments. We expect to have a busy school year this year. Stay cool and have fun!

1st day of school is on Friday 8/26/2022. Come and register your child.
If you have not registered your child in our Chinese school, please visit Registration to learn more about our registration and come to the first two days of school, Aug 26 and Sept 2, at 7pm at Homestead High School (HHS) to register your child. We will be in Building L room L108.

After a successful and safe onsite classroom instruction in the past school year, we plan to continue onsite in the coming 2022-2023 school year, following HHS re-opening policy and guidelines. We encourage everyone to be fully vaccinated and to wear mask inside classrooms. It will help keep everyone safe and healthy during these lingering pandemic times.

Please note that our usual classroom Building B is under renovation. So we will be conducting our classes in Building L this year, which is on the west side of campus, near the intersection of Mary Ave and Homestead Rd, next to the faculty parking lot. Parents are advised to drop off their child along the faculty parking lot which is closest to the classrooms. Our office will be in room L108. Please come to this room if you need any assistance.

For those students who had pre-registered during our early registration period, or registered online, please check out the classroom assignment posted in front of Building L before going to your assigned classrooms.
For others who have not registered, we will conduct our usual onsite registration on Aug 26 and Sept 2 in room L108, our office, in Building L. Registration will start promptly at 7pm so that your newly registered child can go to the classroom asap. Please bring a checkbook to make the tuition payment.

HHS decided to reserve their gyms during their volleyball and basketball season. We are sorry that we would not be able to conduct our badminton class for our parents and community friends during this school year.

See you all on our 1st day of class, Friday Aug 26 at 7pm!

A recap of our school at Hong Kong Day 香港節 on 7/2.
Many thanks to the great support by our board members: Amanda, Angie, Rachel, Rebecca, Wendy, plus their families! Our booth at the event site was able to attract many new perspective parents and also reunite some of our current and former students' parents. At the same time, we collected some potential candidates for our Cantonese and Mandarin teaching opportunities.

This is the first such event held in the bay area. According to the event organizer, there were over 6,500 attendees visited the site. Our booth showcased the uniqueness of our school, where we focus on teaching the Cantonese language. This is the dialect spoken by all the Hong Kong residents, and all the 126 million residents in China's most populous Guangdong (Canton) province. When you know Cantonese, you will feel at ease shopping and dining in all the Chinatowns around the world.

Here are some memorable pictures at the event and an interview by Deltapath.

Visit us at our booth on Saturday 7/2 Hong Kong Day 香港節 in Milpitas.
Hong Kong Day is organized by 415EHK focusing on Hong Kong culture, consisting of food and retail vendors, guests’ seminars, music performances, exhibitions, games, workshops, etc. It will be held on 7/2 from 12 noon to 6pm at Crosspoint Church of Silicon Valley (indoor baseball court) at 658 Gibraltar Ct., Milpitas, CA 95035. For more details of the event, feel free to check out their website, watch the June 20 KTSF26 interview, or visit their Facebook page.

Successful conclusion of the school year. See you in August!
After nine months of on-site Chinese school, all our students deserve a good summer break. During the promotion ceremony on 5/27, we were happy to congratulate six graduating seniors and even happier to be able to award scholarships to four of our senior students. All of them had achieved good academic performance and demonstrated a dedication to learning Chinese and its culture. Here are some pictures of the happy moments from our school official photographer Philip Wong, and some more from our Marketing Director Amanda on our CKA class.

Plenty of fun time in the Family Fun Night 5/13/2022
Due to pandemic concerns, we were not able to hold our annual Chinese New Year party in February, but we made it up with our Family Fun Night in May on Friday the 13th! Thanks to the great effort by the Student Council and numerous board members, we have good participation of students playing till late hours, fundraising with ice cream and milk tea. The pleasant evening weather also help us in enjoying the cheerful outdoor family time.
Our PTA Director Ken Law took lots of pictures here, while our school official photographer Philip Wong took a whole album!

Congratulations to our winners in the ANCCS contests!
Association of Northern California Chinese Schools (ANCCS) conducted their annual academic contests on March 27 and April 3 this year. With much hard work and diligent preparations from both the teachers and the students, we competed with many other fellow students from numerous Chinese schools in the bay area and achieved a superb performance. Congratulations to all our students in participating in this challenging event.
Here are some happy pictures from our school official photographer Philip Wong.

We are gracious to be able to take a class picture together again.
Our class picture day on Feb 18 went smoothly and it was so nice to be able to stand next to each other to take a picture again, instead of sending out a collage of Zoom windows. Many thanks to our school official photographer Philip Wong who took excellent pictures, and our photo editor Gabriella Wong who built in several enhancing backgrounds. Here are the class pictures. Let's hope we can take off our masks next time!
Congratulations to our Read-a-loud winners!
Thank you for the active encouragement from parents and teachers, we have great participations in the Read-a-loud contest.

Our Penmanship Winners are here!
Thank you to all our students who had tried their best to showcase their great calligraphy in the Penmanship Contest. Congratulations!

Apply our scholarship by April 1, 2022!
Thanks to some generous donations from our parents, our school is one of the very few which offer scholarships to our college-bound senior students. There is no limit on the number of scholarships given out. The more applications the better. Please go to the Scholarships page and apply right away!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2022!
Due to the ongoing mutating pandemic: Delta, Omicron, we have to be cautious and limit our celebration event to a small gathering of students in the classroom. We were grateful that Santa Claus is still willing to visit us in each of our classrooms and our photographer Philip Wong was able to catch the moments and share the great pictures with us. Please enjoy!

Great to see faces after zooming a year & a half!
Our first four weeks of classes went by very fast.

In the first two weeks, we had on-site registration which brought our student count to over a hundred, which is actually higher than last year. It is especially encouraging that we are able to open up two kindergarten classes. At this point, we are still accepting enrollment of returning students to 3rd grade and above.

On the third week, we had our annual All Parents Meeting where we introduced our volunteer school board members, and presented information on our finance, parent participation, planned activities and some important dates. Due to COVID concerns, we were not able to provide refreshments for the parents and school board members to mingle and chat for the rest of the hour. We will see if we can make it up in the Chinese New Year party next year.

Next week 9/24 we will have a fire evacuation drill. Upon hearing a rapid alarm bell ringing, teachers will lead their classes to assemble in the open quad area. 9/24 is also our first adult badminton class. Anyone who is interested please join us in the large gym at 7pm.

Stay safe and keep healthy!

First day of school on Friday 8/27/2021 at 7pm
Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to our 2021-2022 school year. We hope everyone is safe and healthy during this pandemic time.

Following Homestead High School (HHS) re-opening policy, we will be conducting our school fully in-person this school year with safety protocols and guidelines in place.  All items below are subject to change per the Santa Clara's country Covid-19 policy.
  1. Everyone is required to wear a mask while one is inside the classrooms or office per the county's policy at this point.
  2. Everyone 12 years and older are highly encouraged to be vaccinated and should be fully vaccinated. If one (12 years and older) is not fully vaccinated, one is encouraged to provide a negative covid-19 test result (within 72 hours) upon entering the classroom buildings.  The school lacks the resources to fully enforce or track the vaccination or testing results of each person.  Self compliance is a critical component and the county's policy will drive changes as needed. The school may ask for documentation in case of potential county's violations.
  3. We will maintain social distancing as required by the county's policy.
  4. HHS had upgraded classroom venting and AC units with the highest grade Merv-13 filters.
  5. To pick up their child at the end of class, parents should wait outside Building B and not inside the hallways to minimize indoor contacts.  Self compliance is a critical component to minimize unpleasant conversations during a violation.

For those students who had pre-registered during our early registration period, please check out the classroom assignment posted in front of Building B before going to their assigned classrooms.
For others who have not pre-registered, we will conduct our usual onsite registration on Aug 27 and Sept 3 at the Student Center in Building H. Registration will start promptly at 7pm so that your newly registered child can go to the classroom asap. Please bring a checkbook to make the tuition payment.

We will offer the badminton class again to our parents this school year. It will be 16 two-hours classes taught by our volunteer coach Ken who was an instructor at Mission College. All participants are required to be fully vaccinated. The signup fee is $160/year or $12/drop-in to cover the court rental and feather birdies. Parents are welcomed to bring their own rackets or use the school rackets provided. Any questions please email Ken at ken.ng5@gmail.com. To sign up please email Ivy at chanivys@yahoo.com or show up to the first class on 9/24/2021 7pm at the school's large gym.

See you all on Friday Aug 27 at 7pm!
